Marilyn Joyce Nicklaus joined her heavenly father on May 24, 2024 at age 96 surrounded by members of her loving family. She was born on Sept. 19, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Mary and Arthur Henry Billings. She married her husband, Edward S. Nicklaus, on March 15, 1947, and they enjoyed 66 years of marriage together. Marilyn was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was greatly devoted to her Catholic faith, which she handed down to her children and grandchildren. She worked as the school secretary at St. Louis School in Austin, Texas from 1965-1986. She was den mother for the school’s cub scout troop. She was active in many activities and ministries at St. Louis Catholic Church, including Altar care, senior ministry, Bible study, Eucharistic ministers, and preparing funeral meals. Marilyn enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. She was a big fan of the San Antonio Spurs. She loved all animals, especially her dogs and cats. She loved listening to music, especially live music, which was particularly important and comforting to her in her last years. After retirement, when her husband and daughter were in assisted living communities, Marilyn’s devotion and daily care for them was a testament to her strength and commitment to her vocation as a wife and mother. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward S. Nicklaus; her daughter, Carrol Nicklaus; and her granddaughter, Sarah Nicklaus. She is survived by her son, Edward M. Nicklaus and his wife Debra of Austin; granddaughter, Laura Nicklaus and her fiancé Ravner Salinas; and granddaughter, Dr. Krista Nicklaus and her partner Dr. Andrew Vanderburg.
The family would like to thank the staff of Juniper Village at Spicewood Summit for their exceptional care.
