When Marjorie was in high school, her father, who was employed by the M-K-T Railroad was transferred to Sealy, Texas. There she met Robert (Bob) Kanewske whose father was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad. They loved to tell their stories of how they first met.
He first saw her and one of her girlfriends at the Texas Theater in Sealy where he was an usher. Another time he saw her was going around the corner on two wheels in her father's Model T and started asking who she was.
The real meeting was when she was playing piano in the school gymnasium and he introduced himself by sitting down beside her on the piano bench. They soon became high school sweethearts. Upon graduation, Marjorie traveled to Austin, Texas to attend her beloved University of Texas, where her blood turned burnt orange forever.
Our mother also loved to tell her story that after she finished her finals in August at U.T., she went back to her dorm room at Kirby Hall, packed her bags and went downtown to the Stephen F. Austin Hotel where she and Bob, the love of her life, got married on August 29, 1944. Two weeks later he shipped out for basic training and on to the Pacific Arena to be in the front lines during World War II. She continued with her education. They were truly one of the couples of the "Greatest Generation".
When Bob had the good fortune to return home from his service, Marjorie graduated, earning a Bachelors of Education degree from U.T. They began their married life with their business ventures. She was always by his side being a partner in his endeavors. She also pursued new interests. She was an active member in the Memorial Methodist Church as secretary and Bob served as a deacon.
She especially loved gardening and was a member of the Barton Hills Garden Club. Marjorie took on several leadership roles including President and Events Coordinator. She especially enjoyed planning sight seeing fieldtrips and parties around Central Texas. They were a great group of ladies and always great fun.
She also became a member of the Austin Gem and Mineral Society. She served in several capacities and loved helping to plan their events. Again, she got the whole family involved.
In 1985, she and our Dad bought a small ranch outside of Llano, Texas. More adventures. Collecting antiques became a passion for us all. The mission was to decorate the new house, built to look like an old farm house with antiques. Our Dad and my husband even built a log cabin. She also loved collecting antique dolls. We all logged many miles with these searches and had a lot of fun. She also enjoyed painting with water colors. Marjorie was self taught and very talented. She painted many beautiful paintings over the years.
Marjorie and Robert (Bob) had a very long, loving and special marriage spanning 76 years.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents, Marie Enthrop Brau, Ralph William Brau, her infant brother Ralph William Brau, Jr., her loving husband Robert (Bob) Kanewske, and her beloved schnauzer, Schnapps. She is survived by her daughter Marie K. Eastty and husband John, son Brent L. Kanewske and numerous cousins.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Brookdale Hospice and Juniper Village at Spicewood Summit for all of their care and kindness these last 4 years.
