Mary Hearn Campbell

MARY HEARN CAMPBELL Mary Hearn Campbell, age 77, went to be with the Lord December 7, 2003, at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio as the result of a tragic accident. She is survived by her three beloved sons and their wives: Tom and Kim Campbell of Austin, Mike and Becky Campbell of The Woodlands, Rusty and Betsy Campbell of Austin; also by her adored grandchildren: Kate and Bethany of Austin, Courtney, Mike, and Collin of The Woodlands, Erin and Amy of Austin; and her great-grandchild Lily of Austin. Other survivors are her sisters Tommy Hancock and Lessie Myrick, brother Ted Hearn, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was born in Bay Springs, Mississippi, to Laverne and Tom Hearn. She remained in Laurel until she went to college at the University of Mississippi where she had a love-at-first-sight experience when she saw Army Air Corps Veteran Mike Campbell who was finishing his education at Ole Miss. They married in 1946. Mike passed away in 1998. They were married for 52 wonderful years. Mike coached football at several schools while establishing himself as an outstanding coach. Mary was his biggest fan and assistant coach. She knew football! They came to Austin in 1957 with Coach Royal to make history with the University of Texas football program. Family and friends were Mary’s life. She was always there to help and be sure that everyone did the right thing in the right way. She was a world-class mother, sympathetic listener, gave good advice, was a great cook, had a great sense of humor, and was a true Southern Belle. “Mama” touched many hearts. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Austin Memorial Park with Monsignor Fred Bomar officiating.
