Mary Stewart Hale September 17, 1948 - October 16, 2003 Our beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend passed away peacefully at home. Born in Houston to William and Ruth Banta Stewart, Mary was the oldest of three children. Her mother died when she was three years old. She and her brother John and sister Ruth gained a couple of new brothers, Doug and Jerry, and a new mother, Edwina Akin Stewart, when her father remarried in 1955. The family then moved to Austin. Mary grew up in Travis Heights. She was valedictorian of her high school class (Wm. B. Travis, 1966) and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas in 1970 with a degree in physical therapy. Mary booked passage to England in 1971 for a working adventure, having accepted a position as a physical therapist at a hospital in Orsett, near London. When she returned to Austin for good in 1988, she brought back with her an accent, husband Geoff (married in 1973) and three small children: David, John, and Ruth. In Austin, she worked as a physical therapist at Brackenridge, Shoal Creek, and St. Davids Hospitals and finally at Reavis Rehab in Round Rock. She was highly respected in her profession. Mary kept the siblings and other relatives in touch, organized get-togethers for birthdays and special occasions, and helped care for her folks. She was always concerned for her patients and devoted to her family and friends. She will be missed for her intelligence, wit, compassion, humility, and courage. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 30 years, Geoffrey Hale; her daughter Ruth; her sons David and John; siblings John Stewart, Ruth Stewart, Doug Jaques, and Jerry Jaques; and mother Edwina Stewart. Services will be held at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar, at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 20. Memorial donations may be made to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
