Born on February 13, 1928, in San Antonio, TX, Mary was the embodiment of grace and love. She married her true love and partner in life, Curtis, in 1948. Together, with humor, love, and more than a little patience, they raised five sons in Port Arthur, TX.
Once the boys left home, she turned her compassion and acuity to educational and professional pursuits, graduating from Vincennes University with a degree in Mental Health Technology and working as a case manager for the Lawerence County Mental Health Center.
Adventures in grandparenting brought her and Curtis to Austin in the early 1980s, where she nurtured, shaped, and loved so well the next generation of Higgs children. She remained actively engaged in her community and family throughout her life. She was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church building community through the Wedding Ring Sunday School Class, Reunion Group, The Well, and myriad book studies. Her time and devotion were also shared volunteering at Palm and Mills Elementary School Libraries and the Marbridge Foundation.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mary Louise Newman, husband Curtis Higgs, sons Clifford and Walter Higgs, and grandson John Higgs. She is survived by son Chris and daughter-in-law Jan, son Phil and daughter-in-law Jean, son Jimmy and daughter-in-law Brenda, daughter-in-law Debbie, 8 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor to First United Methodist Church, The Well, or Marbridge Foundation.
