

Maxine Linn Powell, 99, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 12, 2010. She was born in Haskell, Texas on November 22, 1910 to Mr. and Mrs. Matthew C. Alexander. Her family was in the cattle business in Haskell, her grandfather was Mayor of Haskell, and the family also owned the Alexander Mercantile store there. She graduated from Stamford High School, and studied art at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. She was an accomplished artist, a prominent and well respected businesswoman in Fort Worth and Austin, and owned Royce Studios. She moved her fine portrait studio to Austin in the 1940's to Lavaca Street, and later to Guadalupe until she retired in 1983. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel T. Powell who was a well known architect and custom home designer/builder in Austin for 50 years, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Matthew C. Alexander, sister Florence A. Cecil, and brother Henry C. Alexander. She is survived by her niece, Suzanne Walrath, and her great nephew Kevin A. Pate. Deep appreciation is given to her caregivers Alteris Cathey, Maxine Laws, Paula Alfala, Magdalena Fernandez, and all of the staff at Vista Care Hospice for the excellent care they have given her. Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM on Monday, February 22 at the Highsmith Cemetery on Highway 90 approximately 7 miles west of the intersection of Hwy 183 and Hwy 90A in Luling, Texas. Reverend Russel Matthews of Annunciation Episcopal Church in Luling is officiating. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
