Nancy Ellen Avery Bruner was born 2-11-1937 in Memphis, Tennessee, the youngest of three siblings, including Thomas and Christopher Avery. Her father, Christopher Lester Avery III, worked at Hartwell Handle Factory and her mother, Hester Anderson Avery, was a homemaker. In younger years, Nancy attended Mississippi School for Women and Memphis State where she was active in her sorority. Her goal to graduate from college was postponed after she married Richard Bruner with whom she had three children. She continued to work towards her degree and attended several colleges due to moves, the last being the University of Texas at Austin.
Nancy supported her two sons and daughter in their various activities from Little League and Boy Scouts to art lessons and ballet. She also rescued animals, enjoyed playing the piano, journaling, cooking, going on family vacations, taking her children to the library, working in the yard and antiquing. In 1974, mental illness changed her life dramatically. Although she became distant from friends and family, she continued to show resourcefulness, resilience, and remained fiercely independent.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Patty Bruner and partner Mark Vanek; son, Rodney Bruner, and his partner, Adela Hellen. Nancy is preceded in death by her youngest son, Charles. Charles and Nancy are survived by Charles’ wife, Jennaver Bruner. Charles and Jennaver had five wonderful children including Joshua, Isaiah, Katie, Gabrielle, and Christiana as well as two lovely sons-in-law and two granddaughters.
Nancy’s children would like to thank the team from Homewatch Caregivers of Austin and the staff from Altus Hospice, all of whom showed Nancy compassion and valued her need for autonomy and independence. She in turn showed her appreciation by waving a peace sign and by accepting care from them. In remembrance of Nancy’s life, the family suggests showing acts of kindness in our everyday lives.
