Norwood Delahoussaye the son of Mary Ledia Vosburg and Curtis Burch Delahoussaye, was born June 19, 1918 in Lockport Louisiana. Formerly of Austin, Norwood passed away peacefully in his home in Burnet, Texas on July 4, 2012 at the age of 94.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Fern Delahoussaye, daughter Sue and husband Dr. Ken Tyson; daughter Jill Stimson and husband Hugh; son Lee N. Delahoussaye and wife Linda. Norwood is also survived by five granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Norwood, aka. Del, Houssaye, and Papaw was a proud World War II Veteran, and active member of his community. He served for 12 years on the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries and as a panel member for the Capital Area United Way for several years in the 1980’s. A faithful member of the University Avenue Church of Christ in Austin for many years, Norwood lived his faith as an honorable role model to all who knew him.
Norwood graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1947 and soon went to work for Jefferson Chemical Company/Texaco, Inc. where he worked until his retirement in 1983. Norwood remained a loyal Longhorn Football Fan for all of his life.
Beloved husband and father, Norwood was a devoted family man. He continued to smile through his last days when one of his loved ones was near in spite of his failing health.
As his children, we learned by his example that a person’s success is measured by strength of character, humility and thankfulness. A gentle and generous man, his was truly a life well-lived; our hero.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Norwood’s caregivers throughout the past years and months: Dr. Ace Alsup, his wife Nan, and Barbara Seligman, all of Austin Internal Medicine Associates; also to Seton Highland Lakes Home Health/Hospice for their excellent loving care, we are so very grateful.
Family will receive friends at a catered reception from half past ten o’clock to half past eleven o’clock in the morning, on Monday, the 9th of July 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at half past eleven o’clock in the morning in the Colonial Chapel at Cook-Walden Funeral Home followed by the interment at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family suggests donations be made to Seton Highland Lakes Home Health Care and Hospice, P.O. Box 1219, Burnet, Texas 78611, or the charity of your choice.
