He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Hulda Johnson; his wife of 55 years, Mable, in 2002; brothers Carl, Marvin and Lyndon; sisters Ruby Patton, Gladys Manchaca, and Helen Holland; and son-in-law Patrick Roth.
Oliver is survived by his daughters Suzette Kump (Joe) and Joyce Roth; grandchildren Erik Roth (Alison), Scott Kump (Nicole) and Amy Kump Shaw; great granddaughters Shelby, Abbie, Lindsay and Alyssa; brother Wilburn (Janette); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Oliver had a full and happy life surrounded by his family and friends. At about age 10, he was recognized in the American Statesman as the fastest roofer in Austin. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy Seabees during WWII. He and his mates fought in what might now be considered exotic Pacific Islands -- Guadalcanal, Bouganville, Vella La Vella, Emirau, Australia for their R&R, as well as Sangley Point and Manila in the Philippines. Upon his return from military service, Oliver started building custom homes with his brother Carl, eventually branching out on his own when Carl opened his custom cabinet shop.
Oliver met Mable Barrow when he returned from WWII and they were married August 10, 1946 at historic Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Austin. They welcomed their daughters early in their marriage. His love and care for the girls extended far into their lives. He tried to protect and shield them from unpleasant experiences until his death. Oliver's real joy was being involved in his grandchildren's lives and activities. Oliver enjoyed camping and his time with the young men who passed through Explorer Post 47 of the Boy Scouts of America. He received the Lamb and Silver Beaver awards while in scouting. He attended Philmont Scout Ranch with Erik and Scott, as well as his sons-in-law. Oliver has been a life-long Lutheran. He was baptized at New Sweden Lutheran Church, confirmed at First English Lutheran Church, married at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, and an active member at Faith Lutheran Church, Austin, for the past 63 years.
