The Lord welcomed home his good and faithful servant, Paul Albert Drescher of Austin, Texas on December 23, 2021, at the age of 93 years. Paul was the fourth child born to Charles Carl Drescher (Father) and Elizabeth May Schutz Drescher (Mother) on October 29, 1928, in a farmhouse beside the Bethany Lutheran Church in Greens Creek, Texas. A wood stove caused the house to burn down on December 22, 1928, with everything in it.
A man of strong faith, Paul was baptized March 17, 1929, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Greens Creek. He was confirmed on April 18, 1943, in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in LaGrange, Texas. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas since 1958 where he served on usher team 3 from 1959-2002 and as a funeral usher for many years.
Paul enlisted in the United States Army in San Antonio, Texas on May 28, 1946. He served in Germany from 1946 to 1952 as a United States Constabulary patrolman and as a medical technician. While in the service, Paul attended a local Mardi Gras party in Fussen, West Germany where the soldiers brought food from the base. Paul saw a beautiful woman across the room, and he asked her to dance. Her name was Liselotte Gangl, and they waltzed and talked all night. That evening marked the beginning of years of waltzing, two-steps, and Paul’s favorite: polka. Two weeks later, he saw her again when the local ice hockey team came back victorious from a tournament, and the town came out to greet them. Liz was standing with her friend Olga, and Paul asked Liz if he could drive her home. Desiring a well-tailored uniform and further time with Liz, Paul took his clothes to a shop where she tailored them to fit perfectly.
Paul and Liz have been best friends ever since and were married on April 1, 1952, in Fussen West Germany at Christus Evangelische Kirche (Lutheran Church). Paul was discharged from the Army at Ft. Jackson S.C. on November 14, 1953, at the rank of Sergeant. They welcomed their first son, Tommy James Drescher in 1953, their second son Eddie Roger Drescher in 1955, and their third son Glenn Paul Drescher in 1960. Paul remained an active member of the Out Post #7 United States Constabulary Association.
Paul and Liz raised their family in Austin, Texas where Paul studied Automobile Mechanics through the University of Texas Division of Extension in Industrial Education. He worked as an auto mechanic at the South Lamar Auto Service. He retired on June 12, 1993, after 38 years of dedication. Paul was honored for his service and presented with a plaque which read: “Your hard work, honesty & dependability as a person, mechanic and employee is greatly appreciated.” While his formal employment ended in 1993, he continued to carefully check his family's tire pressure and ask about recent oil changes before he waved goodbye after a visit.
Paul loved the outdoors and frequently took friends and family camping, boating, and water skiing. He volunteered as the Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 413 at Redeemer Lutheran Church for 18 years. As troop leader, he helped organize weekend camping and week-long canoe trips down the Colorado River. This also included strategic flipping and restabilizing of the canoes for safety training for all three of his sons. He drove his family across the United States for family vacations. After the boys left home, he and Liz continued to drive and attend U.S. Constabulary reunions from 1994 - 2015.
Paul is survived by his wife and best friend of 69 years, Liz, sons: Tommy (wife Nita), Eddie (partner Patti), Glenn (wife Kathy), grand-daughters: Hailey (husband Blake), Breckyn (wife Senem), Amy, grand-sons: Hayden and Clay, and great-grandson: Bryce. Other family members include his brother Alfred and numerous well-loved nieces and nephews. Paul was proceeded in death by his parents and siblings Mathilda Wenzel, Frank Drescher, Marie Nietsche and Minnie Drescher.
