A loving and caring father, husband, and grandfather with a family of 5 generations, known for his humor, large family, overcoming obstacles and so much more, Pete Sustaita Martinez, 87, of Austin, Texas was called to heaven on January 20, 2024.
Pete was born April 8, 1936, to Petronilo and Lorenza Sustaita Martinez. A native Austinite raised in East Austin where he resided on E. 4th St. until 2016. In his early years, Pete worked with his family as a migrant worker traveling to Wisconsin and Colorado setting the foundation for a strong work ethic and stories of work and play, including swimming in the Great Lakes. Pete met his wife, Janie, of 69 years in junior high school. They went on to have ten (10) children and watched with pride all of their children raise families of their own.
Married young, throughout their marriage Pete worked a multitude of jobs and served his country as a Paratrooper with the famed Screaming Eagles, 11th Airborne Division of the US Army. A man with many stories, memories and jokes, everyone has a story to tell or joke to share learned from Pete. An avid swimmer, despite having major heart surgery in his 70's, Pete would enjoy running and diving in the pool in his mid-80's and enjoying the lazy river. Noteworthy is Pete's brilliance and for being wise with numbers. It's a family legend if you were born with the 'Martinez nose', then you were born rich with intelligence.
With the support of his wife, Pete was the first in his family to go to college where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and served a notable career as an Adult Probation Officer with Travis County. Following, Pete continued working and upon retiring relocated to Buda, TX where he lived out his last few years enjoying the swimming amenities.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Petronilo and Lorenza Martinez, his son, Tony Martinez, four sisters and two brothers. Pete is survived by his wife, Janie, daughters Melinda (Felix) Agosto, Gina (Patrick) Fuller, Yolanda Martinez, and Dianna (Sergio) Giordano, sons Pete Jr (Diane), Adam (Angelica). Rudy (Maria), Jesse (Daisie), Rene (Melissa), sister Janie (Vincente) Perez and brother Frank (Francis) Martinez.
Pete was blessed with countless grandchildren, many of whom he helped raise and stood as the father figure for including two granddaughters Mary (Mark) Greene and Danika Martinez who will always be endlessly appreciative of him and all that he did for them, along with numerous great grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren.
