

Raquel “Rachel” Escobar Garza, 75, of Austin, joined our Lord and Savior on the evening of Sunday the 5th day of December in the year of two thousand-ten. Raquel was born on the 29th day of January in the year nineteen thirty five in Roma, Texas to parents, Santos Escobar and Paula Soza Escobar, and was married to Genaro Garza of Austin for more than 60 years.
Raquel married the love of her life Genaro Garza in July of the year nineteen fifty in Roma, embarking on a journey that would cover over 60 years. One of Raquel’s joys in life, besides her family, was working for Academy Sporting Goods. She joined the company in the year nineteen seventy one and for the next 35 years loyally and faithfully served the company until her retirement in the year two thousand and six. Everyday Raquel was at work she enjoyed helping customers find their way around the store and working alongside her comadre Patsy Lopez. On Behalf of Raquel and her family, we would like to thank Dr. Allen Sonstein and his staff for their many years of care as Raquel’s physician, you gave us more time to spend with Raquel and we’re forever grateful for that gift. Raquel is preceded in death by her parents Santos Escobar and Paula Soza Escobar, her brother Rudolfo Escobar, and her Daughter Delma Garza Turner. She is survived by her husband Genaro Garza of Austin, her daughter and son-in-law, Thelma and Lee Polanco of Austin, son and daughter-in-law, Romeo and Rosie Garza of Round Rock, son-in-law, Donald Franklin Turner of Austin, sister, Maria Escobar of Roma, sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Felix Contreras of Austin, brother and sister-in-law Roy and Delia Escobar of Austin, sister-in-law Evangelina Escobar of Austin, and uncle and aunt Tony and Ella Soza of Austin. Raquel is also survived by her nine beloved grandchildren, Dr. Trace Polanco and wife, Dr. Leticia Polanco, of Chula Vista, CA, Andrea Garza of Austin, Stephanie Paver and Husband, Patrick, of Austin, Stephen Polanco and wife, Moriah, of Somerville, MA, Amy Vargas and husband, Henry, of Austin, Jonathan and Jeffrey Turner of Austin, Paul and Joseph Garza of Round Rock, and four great granddaughters, Calista, Cielo, and twins Cienna and Ruby Raquel Polanco, who were born on their great-grandmother’s birthday, of Chula Vista, CA, and great grandson, William Paver of Austin, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 9th of December, in the Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1100 Main Street, Buda, Texas.
