Rick was born on January 7, 1949. He spent the first six months of his life in the St Anthony's Orphanage located in Kansas City, Missouri. On a very happy day he was adopted by Gerry and Elsie Wempe.
Rick mostly grew up in Marysville, KS where like any young male child he provoked his younger sister Connie and therefore his parents. When he was a teenager he and some friends kind of broke into the local bowling alley and had some fun. Rick had a stern talking to by his parents over this incident.
Rick actually grew into a very responsible young man. He was a lifeguard at the local swimming pool and was well respected. He attended Kansas State University where he also served as a Campus Fireman to earn a place to live on Campus. As luck would have it the University had a major fire that these young Campus Firemen could not control. Yes, part of the University was demolished by that fire.
After college Rick stayed at the YMCA in Omaha, NE while looking for a job. He was hired by the IRS and worked there until he retired in 2009. He met Cecilia, AKA Mick McManaman, the love of his life, and they were married on May 5, 1984. The central focus of their lives, Jacob, was born on October 31, 1987.
Rick loved his God, his faith, his Church, attending Mass, and saying the Rosary. He loved his family so very much and he and his son Jacob were best buddies. Rick was a very good friend to many. His wife expressed that he was the kindest, most considerate person she had ever known and she would forever miss him.
He is preceded in death by his infant son Eric Michael, parents Gerry & Elsie Wempe, sister Connie 'Wempe l Mertes and various relatives. Rick is survived by his wife and son, Mick and Jacob; brothers-in-law Mike Mertes and Eugene McManaman (Christine), sisters-in-law, Kay Wattier, Mary Pat Boesch (Don),Veronica McManamon, Sharon Runyan (Mark), Nephews Lance Mertes (Kathy), Michael Boesch (Angela), George Boesch, Niece Brandi Fuchs (Jim) and many nieces and nephews.
