Robert Littlefield Buford, Jr. passed away peacefully on the morning of July 28, 2016, at his home in Austin. Bob was born on March 4, 1935, in Austin, a 4th generation Austinite, the son of Robert Littlefield Buford, Sr. and Eileen Buckley Buford. He attended University Junior High and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School. He then attended the University of Texas, received his BBA from SMU, and completed graduate work at both SMU and Emory School of Law. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
His fondest childhood memories were of hunting trips with his dad. This in turn led to his interest in skeet shooting, which he had an affinity for at a young age, traveling cross country to participate in skeet shooting tournaments. He excelled at this, and ended up winning two National Skeet Championship Titles, the "National Skeet Shooting Association All-American" as well as the "Sports Afield Magazine All¬ American". For seven years he was both a "Winchester Shooting Ace" and a "Remington Shooting Star".
In addition to skeet shooting, he was passionate about geology, astronomy, the universe, crossword puzzles and animals. Though a hunter in his younger years, Bob became a protector of animals in his later years. He also loved to talk about politics and the stock market. However, his love of Rock 'n' Roll music and dancing the jitterbug to Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and other 50's greats, remained his favorite activity throughout his life. On his 75th birthday he won the "Jitterbug Championship" on a cruise ship.
Bob was a Real Estate Investor/Developer and active commercial broker. The owner of R.L. Buford Company Commercial Real Estate Firm in Dallas and Austin, he was co-founder and past officer of Austin Commercial Real Estate Society (A.C.R.E.S.), and elected to three terms on the Realtor Board of Directors - Commercial Division. He also served four years on the Travis County Central Appraisal Review Board. A past¬ president of the West Austin Rotary Club, he served on the Board of Directors for eight years, and was elected to the Rotary District "Roll-of¬ Fame". He was also a member of The Bachelor's Club of Austin, The Austin Club, The Austin Assembly, and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
He dearly loved his family, which is our greatest gift. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Peoples Buford, his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Littlefield Buford III, and Margaret; daughter and son-in-law, Christy Buford Werner and Mark; grandson, Camden Buford Werner, and granddaughter, Kinsley Christine Werner, all of Austin.
His body will lie in state from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Following his wishes, a small family graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery on Monday, August 1, 2016.
