

While in High School and College he was a life guard, swimming instructor, a water safety instructor (WSI), and managed several public swimming pools. He received a B.S. in Secondary Education from Texas A&I University in Kingsville in 1974. Roy taught Technology Education in the Donna and McAllen school districts and most recently the Austin school district. He retired after a total of 37 years of teaching a variety of subjects that included small engine repair, photography, robotics, solar energy, mass production, model rockets and race car design, pen making, and woodcraft. He was also a year book advisor for a number of years. He always enjoyed unexpected visits from former students and encountering them when shopping.
While living in the Rio Grande Valley, Roy worked many summers for the Fish and Wildlife Service at the Santa Anna Wildlife Refuge heading the United States Youth Conservation Corps. He received a certificate in recognition of his enhancement of our Nation’s resources and the education of our youth.
Roy enjoyed bringing the classroom home to his daughters and teaching them many skills. He was passionate about fishing. He also enjoyed camping trips with the family, gardening, woodcraft, and home improvement projects.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel and Alicia and brother, Larry Arce. He is survived by his wife, Dinah Arce; daughters, Tessa and Tara Arce; brothers, Red and Oscar Arce; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
The family gratefully acknowledges the excellent care and support given by the doctors and nurses at Texas Oncology and St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.
Roy’s family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday, August 19, 2013 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. A Celebration of Roy’s life will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 20, 2013 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with The Rev. Canon Len Giacolone officiating. Interment will follow the services at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to be made in Roy’s memory to a charity of choice.
