I am so grateful to you, John, for calling me to tell me of your mother's death.

When my mother, Eva Gay, was ill, Aunt Ruth and I connected with each other a number of times by telephone.  She was so lovely and I regret that we had always lived so far apart and that I hadn't had a chance to know her better.

Each time we talked, she would tell me how much she loved her family.

My thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

Aunt Ruth was a true treasure in our family.  I can remember how excited we would be when we heard Aunt Ruth was coming to Duncan for a visit.  We loved her dearly and our fondest memories of the Buckholts family always
include Aunt Ruth.
In the summers Aunt Ruth would let the boys come to Grandma and Grandpa's
for a week and all cousins gathered there for a week.  What mayhem and mischief we could all cook up:  mud pies of all sizes and shapes; jumping from the hayloft to the stacks of hay  Mike had gathered under the loft door; riding poor ol' Rodie the mule; all of us building a raft on the pond behind the barn
and riding it together; running to the road to greet visitors and relatives when
we heard them cross the cattle guard; going in the smokehouse with Grandpa and looking at all the smoking meats hanging from hooks;  being scared to
death to use the Outhouse, sure that a snake or other monster resided in there and would bite us the minute we sat down;  the family celebration when they  finally had an indoor bathroom off the well house room next to the kitchen:  I can remember the tours of the bathroom given by all the cousins and our
great excitement; having grandmother pull up the well water from the cistern beside the sink in the kithen;  trying to drink water from the ladle beside the
water bucket making sure you did not drink from any  place on the ladle where
other people had drank - this meant curling your lips and tongue around the handle which caused the water to spill most everywhere but your mouth; watching Gradmother answer the crank wall telephone because Gramdmother was so short and Grandpa told the installer to put it "there" which was at his
height and he was very tall; and very particular delight was jumping on Grandpa's feather bed after Grandmother had fluffed it all up from the night
before - John and David were particularly good at this and could even get on
top of the headboard for amazing dives into the fluffy featherbed (Aunt Ruth would come running in and demand immediate evacuation but that only lasted until she went back into the other room, and I am SURE she coudl not hear us
in the next room; when falls and injuries were treated with Iodine and/or Methiolate with all cousins witnessing the excruciating pain of getting the wound cleaned up and then set absolutely on fire with the Methiolate: but that Methiolate, bright, bright red covering the wound and running down and all around was our badge of honor for the rest of the week which could be prevailed upon to evoke sympathy from the other cousins the rest of the week;
the girls curling Grandpa's hair in pincurls with bobby pins holding it there
tightly while he was sleeping - I am sure giggling girls twirling your hair and sticking your scalp repeatedly with bobby pins ensured a good nap - but
Grandpa never let on that he was really awake;  sitting on the front porch and front steps waiting for all the other cousins and their families to arrive and it seemed eternities before they ever got there;  and our absolute favorite and one we tell everytime we get together is when Grandpa had the sow and her new baby piglets caged just off the frontyard so the other pigs would not mess with her as she was quite contrary - well for the whole week we had climbed up on the rails many times everyday to watch the baby pigs - well one thing lead to another and for some reason we as a group decided it would be great fun to see if John could ride the mother pig (a contrary, mean ol' sow).  We worked and worked on convincing John this would be a good thing but it never took hold and he refused for days,  we finally solved our problem by deciding since John refused to get in the mud and grime and ride that sow that we would simply slip David over the rails and then tell him how to get on that ol'
sow -  the minute we dropped him over those rails that sow went absolutely beserk snorting, running and lunging at David and scaring us all to death so
SOMEBODY had to get in there TOO and rescue David - Mike became the hero
and jumped in and dragged a sceaming wailing David out of there with no time to spare - Aunt Ruth voiced her immediate displeasure with all of us but
it had been such fun and so scary we could never erase that from our minds
and I am laughing out loud as I write this;  and one of my fondest memories was the way Aunt Ruth talked and sounded when she would say, "Oh, Papa"
"Jennings (our dad's name)",  "Now Mae" - she had a way  of saying words with the vowels held for so long in such a sweet loving way it made you love her even more:  George Anna always tells about the time everyone was gathered for our father's funeral and Aunt Ruth had slipped away into George Anna's
bedrom to catch a quick smoke out of Aunt Mae's peering eyes and suddenly
Aunt Mae opened the door and walked right in and Aunt Ruth pitched that
cigarette over across the bed so Aunt Mae couldn't catch her smoking!;  Aunt Ruth and Uncle Charles letting Mike drive his '55 MG to Duncan when they  came for a visit - I fell absolutely in love with that car and that is the exact reason I went to college, so I could buy a '55 MG when I graduated - and when I graduated in 1971 there were no '55 MG's to buy and to this day I am still disappointed - I still think of that car often and how MIke drove it like a king -
that started my  passion for cars and I have bought and owned myself a Corvette, Olds 442, and am now driving a Thunderbird convertible which is the joy of my life.
Dear, dear Aunt Ruth and her wonderful life and wonderful boys and the great pleasure she gave all of us.  She may have lived 98 years but it was much, much too soon to lose her and the joy she brought not only to us but all who knew her.  She occupied a great part of my heart and I will always, always deeply, deeply miss her.  A joy and grace has departed this world and I only hope there is an endless supply of cigarettes to comfort her in her new home in Heaven.
