He was born in August 1938, and was raised in Poplar Bluff, Missouri by parents Evelyn and Frank Martin. Sam started college at the College of the Ozarks in 1956 and completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville in 1960. Sam attended medical school at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock from 1961-65. It was in Little Rock that he met the love of his life, Cecilia. Sam often said, “Cecilia was the best thing that ever happened to him”. They married in June 1963. The newlyweds moved to Kansas City for Sam’s internal medicine residency. His practice included the Raytown Clinic and two other medical groups in the Kansas City area. After Sam’s retirement, they moved to Austin, TX in 2006 to be closer to his grandchildren. Graveside service at Austin Memorial Park occurred on October 5 at 10:00.
Sam was a loving husband and a wonderful father. He was also a devoted grandfather, helping to raise and support his grandchildren in Austin during his retirement. He had a wide variety of passions. Sam and Cecilia were ballroom dancers and joined in many community dances. They also enjoyed traveling abroad. Cecilia said Sam loved everything Chinese – the food, the people, and the culture. He spent many hours studying Chinese language. As a father, Sam was patient and supportive. He was involved in scouting trips and century rides (cycling) with his kids. Sam was an avid golfer and enjoyed bicycling. Sam was a music fanatic, appreciating almost all genres of music. He enjoyed singing, playing guitar, and teaching himself to play the ukulele.
Sam is survived by his wife Cecilia Maben (marriage 58+ years). He is also survived by his son Robert Maben M.D. (wife Sandia, son Alex), son Paul Maben-Electrical Engineer (wife Alexia, daughters Tabitha and Diana), and daughter Sue Shieh M.D. (husband James, daughter Rylie, son Zane).
