Sylvia R. Baumel, age 100, of Austin passed away on August 22, 2011. She was born April 15, 1911 in a small town in Poland. As a teen, she came to this country with her parents to settle in Columbus, Ohio. She worked at the family gourmet grocery store until she met her husband, Jack Baumel.
In the late 1930’s, she moved to Austin to raise a family. Sylvia was very active in the Jewish Community and was a member of Hadassah, B’nai Brith and many other charitable organizations. After many years as members of Congregation Agudas Achim, Sylvia and Jack were founders of Congregation Beth El.
In 1983, Jack and Sylvia moved to Delray Beach, Florida to retire. Sylvia was an avid bridge player, fabulous cook, and very religious.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jack, and her daughter, Marsha.
Sylvia is survived by her sister, Shirley Greenfield; two sons, Bruce and Harris “Cookie” Baumel; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Sylvia’s funeral will be in Delray Beach, Florida where she will be laid to rest next to Jack and Marsha.
