Ted R. Hendricks, age 80, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, after a courageous battle against cancer. Ted was born in San Antonio, Texas and later moved to Houston where he attended San Jacinto High School. He is preceded in death by his mother Erna Strain, his stepfather Thomas V. Strain (Pop) and stepsister Patricia Seaback. Ted attended the University of Houston and a few years after graduating served as Director of the Alumni Association. He was a loyal U of H fan and supporter. While attending the University, Ted was a member of a local fraternity, Kappa Delta Kappa. The "Brothers" of KDK have remained close friends for all these years and were extremely supportive and comforting during his illness. The majority of his working life was spent in property management, both in Houston and Austin. He received his Certified Property Management designation in 1980 and served as Executive Director, as well as, past president of the Austin Apartment Association. Ted held a lifetime fascination with aviation and fulfilled a dream by earning his pilot's license in 1972. He was fortunate to have access to a company plane for business trips and a few fun trips with the family. Service and commitment to church were always important to Ted. He was an active Episcopalian and served on several vestries. He was senior warden at two parishes, in addition to duties as lay reader and eucharistic minister. His efforts and leadership on building committees and fund raisers (especially his favorite, the Holy Cow BBQ) demonstrated how much he truly believed in his church. Ted was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Del, his daughter, Lisa Ottenbacher and husband, Ron, son Victor Hendricks and wife, Karen and grandsons, Kyle Hendricks and Keller Hendricks. He is also survived by his stepbrother Tom Strain and sisters-in-law, Beverly Anderson and husband, Cecil, Lola Grenwelge and Lucy Somers and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank MD Anderson Hospital Chemotherapy and Radiation staff for the treatment and care they provided. And most recently, our sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses of Cornerstone Hospital in Austin for their genuine care, concern, and efforts to sustain his life. A memorial service will be held in Austin at Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church, 8134 Mesa Drive, on Saturday, January 9th at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Anglican Church, P. O. Box 4616, Lago Vista, Texas 78645 or to the University of Houston Development Office, 400 E. Cullen Bldg, Houston, TX 77204.
