Thomas “Tom" Loftus of Austin, Texas passed away on March 21st, 2025, at the age of 65. He was born on July 28th, 1959, in Barrhead, Scotland, just outside of Glasgow, where he grew up as the youngest of four siblings. From a young age, Tom showed a natural aptitude for engineering, which led him to study electrical engineering at Paisley University. He entered the working world and ended up at Motorola in East Kilbride, Scotland, an opportunity that eventually brought him and his family to move across the ocean to Austin, Texas.
Tom flourished in the semiconductor industry, working his way up at several major firms around Austin, including AMD and Intel. He spent the last decade at Samsung, where he served as the site lead for GPU Design Verification, managing a team of engineers.
Tom met Pam in 2013, and they instantly clicked, marrying the following year under the Las Vegas sign. From then on, they built a life full of laughter, travel and everyday joys–like riding their e-bikes or sitting on the deck of their house in Galveston, taking in the view of the ocean. Their home was a central meeting place, hosting many dinners, late nights, and celebrations. Tom was a great cook, and meals at their house were always something to look forward to.
Tom had a lifelong love of music—especially jazz—and had played guitar since childhood. He delighted in creating music with friends and coworkers, memorably taking the stage to perform at his own birthday party. He was equally at home improvising a solo or sharing his favorite tunes with family. He also stayed active, playing squash and joining weekly soccer games with a loyal group of friends.
He is survived by his wife Pam Loftus and other family in Austin and Scotland. Tom will be remembered for his grounding presence, witty humor, and the joy he brought to everyday life. He was curious, thoughtful and effortlessly easygoing—always steady and content, no matter the circumstances.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at The County Line on the Hill on April 27th, from 1-4pm. Please RSVP using the link below so we can plan accordingly: https://evite.me/2MceaUShVx
Tom loved to recite Philip Larkin’s poem, This Be The Verse. These words are written to share that memory and honor his poetic soul.
This Be Tom’s Verse
He lit you up, our friend named Tom,
With eyes that saw what others passed.
He listened well and carried calm,
And gave far more than ever asked.
He played guitar, he wrote in rhyme,
He cooked with joy, and grilled with pride.
He was good company all the time,
With laughter, music, food, and wine.
He rode his bike on greenbelt trails,
His spirit stilled in quiet reflection.
He played squash with friends, told funny tales,
And smoked his salmon, to perfection.
He poured a glass of bold red wine,
A zin, a cab, he liked them well.
He knew the way a good one shines,
And with each bottle, more tales to tell.
His greatest gift, the simplest part,
A love for Pam, so warm and true.
He held her close within his heart,
He loved her deeply, through and through.
So raise a glass, and play a tune,
Recall his laugh, his clever prose.
Though gone too soon, not lost so soon,
He’s in the stories that we choose.
