Tom was born on November 23, 1931, in Amarillo, Texas to Adrienne Attebury Curtis and Eli Curtis. He graduated from Amarillo high school where he was a standout baseball and football player. Tom then went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin for undergraduate as well as Law School. Tom was especially proud to become an Editor of the Texas Law Review before graduating. It was also during this time that Tom spent one year in Europe during the Korean War, while he was in the Army Counterintelligence Corps. After graduating from law school, Tom moved to Dallas Texas to begin his career as a new lawyer. He was lucky enough to land a job with Strasburger and Price where he met his mentor, Henry Strasburger. Tom used to say that everything he knew about being a lawyer came from Mr. Strasburger. Tom practiced law in Dallas for several years until he decided to move back to Amarillo to start a family and pursue bigger opportunities. That bigger opportunity was Tom becoming the Potter County District Attorney for 13 years. Tom knew the importance of having a good mentor, so he staffed his office with young smart Assistant DA’s that all ended up being excellent Lawyers and lifelong friends until the end. Once Tom left the DA’s office he and his family moved to Austin, Texas where Tom practiced law for another 30 years. It was Tom’s love of hunting and fishing with his family and his dogs that brought him the most joy. Tom was especially proud to be the father of Lisa, Shari, Tommy and Terry. Tom always found the time to be there for his kids no matter what. Tom’s favorite hunting and fishing buddy though had to have been his little brother Terry “booty” Curtis. These guys did everything together and remained close throughout their lives. Tom’s love for the great outdoors eventually took him to the great state of Montana where he discovered the mighty Yellowstone River. He was hooked and made Montana his second home. In Montana, Tom filled his days with hunting and fly fishing with his family and friends. Tom took great pride in all the friendships he established over the years and will be missed by many. Tom passed away peacefully on November 19, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 90. He is preceded in death by his parents Adrienne Attebury Curtis and Eli Curtis; Terry A. Curtis, his younger brother; Tommy W. Curtis, his oldest son.
A funeral service for Tom will be held Monday, December 5, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 6300 West William Cannon Drive, Austin, TX 78749.
