Tommie Lou Gauntt passed away in Austin, Texas on Sunday, February 7th, 2016 at the age of 86. Tommie was born December 29th, 1929 in East Saint Louis, Illinois. At the age of 2, the late Thomas and Martha Hamby of Austin, Texas adopted her.
As a child, Tommie spent many hours helping her parents at their business, The Original Hoffbrau, a restaurant that continues to be operated by Tommie’s extended family in downtown Austin. After graduating from Saint Mary’s Academy and attending the University of Texas, she was employed at Scarborough’s Department Store and the Internal Revenue Service before enjoying a long career at the Texas Employment Commission. She married Stephen Jones Gauntt on New Year’s Day, January 1st, 1950 at Saint Austin’s Catholic Parish in Austin. A life-long devout catholic, Tommie attended Saint Austin’s Catholic Parish before going on to worship at Saint Louis King of France Catholic Church for over 30 years. In her spare time Tommie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, crocheting, reading and telling jokes. Her gracious spirit, humbling nature, and universal caring for others are just some of the qualities that those who knew her admire the most.
In addition to her parents and sister, her husband, Stephen Jones Gauntt, who died November 24th, 1960, precedes Tommie in death. She is survived by her son, Stephen Thomas Gauntt; three grandchildren, Stephen Byron (Lindsay) Gauntt, Susan Gauntt and Sarah (Christopher) Bowers; six great-grandchildren, Melinda, Margaret, Maeve, Thomas, Stephen David and Grace; and close friend Jean Drake.
