Tommie was born in Austin, Texas on September 7, 1932. He grew up in the "metropolis" of Anson, Texas just north of Abilene, where he met the love of his life, Lettye Eason, in the fourth grade. Tommie graduated from Anson High School and went on to graduate from the University of Texas in 1955. He and Lettye were married in 1954 and he served with the US Army from 1955 to 1957 where they were stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. When they returned to Texas, he worked for the Texas Department of Transportation as a professional civil engineer and retired from TxDOT as the Director of the Automation Division in 1993. His list of accomplishments and accolades during his career at TxDOT would be too numerous to name. Tommie served as an elder at the Highland Village church of Christ where he was a member for over 50 years.
Tommie took the responsibility of family very seriously, never letting career or outside influences distract him from being a dedicated husband and father. He raised his children to respect others, be responsible and keep a positive attitude even in the face of adversity. Humor and the ability to laugh even in the face of troubles was a hallmark of how he raised his children. Family get togethers and even the dinner table were always filled with laughter. Most importantly he raised his children to love God and put faith in Him.
Tommie never met a stranger. His smile could brighten a room and he was well known for his ''Tommie hugs". He was a lifelong Longhorn fan and attended most all home games for over 40 years, first as a stadium usher and then as a season ticket holder. His faith in God and kindness towards others is a lasting tribute. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives were touched by him.
Tommie is survived by his brother Jim and wife Dianne; his son Brian and wife Stephanie, daughters Nina E. Kroeker and husband Rob Gaines, and Susan Templeton and husband Bryce; grandchildren Courtney Simpson and husband Kenny, Tim Kroeker and wife Leasha, and Remington Templeton, plus numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Lettye Eason Howell.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2016 at Highland Village church of Christ, 4716 Bull Creek Road. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
