

Violet Ireland, age 96, passed away on September 2, 2003, in Austin, Texas. Born in Granbury, Texas to Thomas Andrew and Inez Dickson Sargent, she lived in Granbury until she graduated from Grandbury High School in 1925. She then moved to Ft. Worth, Texas and became a secretary at the Texas and Pacific Coal and Oil Company. It was there that she met her future husband, a chemist with the company named Lewis James Ireland. They were married on December 24, 1930, in Cleburne, Texas, in the home of the brides sister, Mrs. Lora Roe. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Austin, Texas, where she lived until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, and son Robert Preston. She is survived by a son, Joe L. Ireland, nieces, Mrs. Marjorie Williams of Ft. Worth, Mrs. Dorothy Arnold of Mobile, Alabama, and Mrs. Mary Louise Kearns of Whitehouse, Texas, a nephew Thomas Sargent of Azle, Texas, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Sargent of Azle, Texas. Other survivors include great nieces, Mrs. Nancy Carr and husband Raymond, Mrs. Cynthia Youngblood and husband Matt, and Paige Sargent, great nephews Chad Sargent and Thomas Kearns, great-great nieces, Lori Phugh and husband Forrest and Amanda and Jennifer Youngblood, and one great-great-great nephew, Landry Phugh. Mrs. Ireland was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Austin for over sixty years. She was active in the W.S.C.S., and taught childrens Sunday school at the church for many years. She was a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts, and then actively assisted her husband in his work with the Boy Scouts of America, a work that lasted over thirty years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and traveling, and in her youth was an artist and a pianist. She was a beloved wife, mother, and aunt, and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be Friday, September 5th between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Austin Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 6th.
