Virg left her wonderful 71 year life here on Earth to her new Heavenly one at 6:02 on Sunday night, February 15th, 2015. Terminal Stage Four Cancer greatly expedited this move. Thanks to Our Lord Jesus, modern medical technology and an incredible Hospice team, her last minutes, hours and days with us were not only peaceful and almost pain free, but beautiful and humorous.
Virginia Vera Lane was the first of Bernice and Crawford Lane's six children. Right from that first moment (on February 7th, 1944 in Rutherfordton, NC) when our good Lord blessed this earth with Virg until the Sunday in February when he took her to Heaven, she was a sensational daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, neice, great neice, aunt, cousin, wife & friend. Her continual positive love filled Christian persona not only touched everyone... it greatly influenced us all. She was one of those rare individuals who "walked the walk" with her savior, Jesus Christ, throughout her entire time here on Earth. It is truly wonderful that she is now reunited in Heaven with her brother Coleman, her parents, Shannon and many others who were, are & always will be near and dear to her..while at the same time being right here with us.. now, for years to come... and rumor has it (and the belief of many of us)... FOREVER.
During a terrific career as a flight attendant (They called them "stewardesses" in those days) with Piedmont Airlines she happened to meet Todd Colvin. At that time, most all of the airlines (including Piedmont) had the policy to terminate female flight attendants once they got married. Virg was terminated when she and Todd married on July 23, 1966 and filed a suit against Piedmont. Almost two years later, "June 20, 1968 The EEOC issued three individual rulings, setting permanent precedents, on airline age and marriage policies: Neal vs. American, Dodd vs. American and Colvin vs. Piedmont. With these three cases, the EEOC declared age and marital restrictions on stewardess' employment to be illegal, sex discrimination under title VII, whether or not a carrier also employed men as flight attendants and treated them differently."
Virg's brothers and sisters are: Ruth Turton of Charlotte, NC, Coleman Lane of Atlanta, GA (died of cancer a couple of years ago), Roy Lane of Charlotte, NC, Ron Lane of Mooresville, NC and Alberta Jutovsky of Abilene, TX.
Her five children are: Scott Colvin of Cedar Park, TX, K.C. Colvin of Austin, TX, Kelley Boas of Bristol, WI, Sharon Stringer of Stanton, TN & Laura Colvin of Chiacgo, IL.
Virginia also has fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, an aunt & uncle, six nieces, three nephews, two great nieces, seven great nephews, several cousins and many, many, many loving friends all over the world.
The first of three "Celebration of Virg's Life" services will be held here in Austin at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas 78750 on Saturday, April 11th, 2015, beginning at 2pm. There will be another service held at Community Christian Church in Lincolshire, IL (Date to be determined). The third service will be in the Charlotte, NC area (Date & location to be determined).
