

Walter E. Sjoberg, Jr., MD, of Cypress Mill and Austin, Texas, died on January 4, 2011. He was born in Austin on August 10, 1924 to Walter E. Sjoberg, Sr. and Lillian Ann Sjoberg. Dr. Sjoberg graduated from Austin High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He received Bachelors and Masters degrees in experimental psychology from the University of Texas and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Sjoberg completed a fellowship in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he played saxophone for the Notochords dance band. A gifted diagnostician with subspecialties in hematology and gastroenterology, Dr. Sjoberg practiced internal medicine in Austin for forty-one years, serving as Chief of Staff at St. David’s Hospital in the 1970s. He was beloved by his patients for his no-nonsense approach to medicine and rather candid bedside manner. Dr. Sjoberg was a distinguished fellow in the American College of Medical Quality and held memberships in the Texas Medical Association, the Travis County Medical Society, the American Society of Hematology, the International Society of Hematology, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the Southern Medical Association, and the Mayo Alumni Association. He was appointed by Governor Perry to the Nursing Facility Administrators Advisory Committee in 2005. Dr. Sjoberg was a long time member of the Headliner’s and Admiral’s clubs. He retired to his vineyard in Cypress Mill, Texas in 2000, where he kept his professional skills sharp treating his herds of goats and sheep. He was predeceased by his parents, and in 1974, his first wife of 24 years, Elizabeth Ann Mayer Sjoberg. Dr. Sjoberg is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth F. Sjoberg; son Matt and wife Kristin, and grandchildren Allison, John, and Robert, all of Austin; son Will and wife Millie, and grandchildren Sam and Peter, of Falls Church, Virginia; and stepson Robert Huddleston and his daughter, Alexandra, of Cypress Mill. The Funeral Service will be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 8th of January, in the chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Boulevard in Austin, where Reverend Barry Fulton, is to officiate. Interment will follow at Decker Cemetery.
