

Walter grew up on Duval Road and graduated from Austin High School. One of his proudest accomplishments in life was serving in WWII as a B24 tail gunner. He completed 30 missions and returned home safely to Austin. At the end of the war he was honorably discharged from the Air Force and completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Texas in Austin. While attending UT his best friend, Harold Clark, introduced Walter to Joye Clark, who was also a student at UT. Walter began attending Central Christian Church with Joye where they participated in Young Adults together. Marrying Joye was the highlight of his life in 1951. The Air Force recalled Walter back to active duty for the Korean Conflict and they moved to George AFB in California. When the Korean Conflict ended they returned to Austin where he worked for the Civil Service at Bergstrom AFB for the next 30 years. Upon retirement Walter earned his Master's Degree in Industrial Arts from Southwest Texas State. He began teaching at McCallum High School for the next 18 years before retiring a second time. In retirement Walter and Joye continued to enjoy spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Another retirement passion they shared was shipboard cruising around the world.
Walter has been a member of Central Christian Church for over 67 years where he was Elder Emeritus. Walter served as a Mason and was a member of Hill Country Lodge # 456.
Walter is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Joye L. White. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Brian and Barbara White, his son and daughter-in-law Clark and Margaret White, five grandchildren Craig White, Ross White, Leah White, Lauren Berkebile, and Morgan McLaughlin, and two great-grandchildren Olivia Joy White and Jackson White.
A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. There will be a memorial service at 10:00 a.m., Friday, at Central Christian Church, 1110 Guadalupe, with Dr. Eric Gates officiating. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
