

William Newcomb Alexander, born September 4, 1908 in Austin, Texas, died at the age of 102 in Mission, Texas on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. He was a life long member of the Episcopal Church. On July 16, 1938 he married Mae Belle Hausenfluke in Bastrop County, Texas. Two daughters were born - Kathy in 1941 and Connie Jean in 1944.
Newcomb is survived by: his two daughters, Connie Walsh (Richard) and Kathy Woodmansee; 6 grandchildren – James Woodmansee, Connie, Kondick (Francis), Robin Wewe (Joe), Scott Walsh (Coley), Kelly Rodriguez (Roel), Shannon San Miguel (Luis) and great-grandchildren Brittney Woodmansee (Damian ), Cheryl Woodmansee, Bethany Kondick, Laurynn Kondic, Michael Rodriguez, Daniel Rodriguez, Anamaria Rodriguez, Alexander Rodriguez, Sarah Mae Walsh, Elijah Walsh, Cecilia San Miguel, Elizabeth San Miguel, Sophia San Miguel , Katie Schlicke, Jenna Wewe and great -great granddaughter Kaylin Ortiz. He was preceded in death by this sisters Margaret Watson, Maribel Alsup, Geraldine Sammis.
In his youth Newcomb was a well known figure around the swimming pools in Austin -Deep Eddy and Barton Springs. He honorably served in the Navy during World War II. After the war he went to work for the City of Austin as head of the print shop until he retired in 1970.
He was a charter member of the Austin Gem and Mineral Society of Austin. His passion was rock hunting, cutting and polishing rocks and faceting gems. He is fondly remembered by those who spent time in his Colorado home and on the harrowing mountain jeep rides.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 9 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Pastor Hugh Beck officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
