

Dexa Florence Paul Lugten was the only child of Forest Ellsworth Paul and Dexa Strait Paul in Pacific Grove, California. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California Berkeley and Master of Arts from Columbia University. Dexa held teaching positions at Ceres and Richmond, California and worked for the Defense Department, Navy and Stanford University.
In 1953, Dexa met her future husband Cornelis Lugten aboard the SS Veendam while on a cruise to Europe with former Berkeley Alpha Omicron Pi sorority sisters. She and Cornelis (Kees) married in 1954 and lived in California, Illinois, Massachusetts and Milan, Italy before settling in South Ascot, England where Dexa was a member of the Wentworth Club in Surrey, the Sunningdale Ladies’ Golf Club and was active in her bridge and book clubs.
Dexa and Kees moved to New York where she died peacefully on Long Island. She is survived by her son Peter and his wife Denice and grandchildren Alexandra and Elizabeth of Lindenhurst, NY; and son Paul and his wife Katie and grandchildren Emma, Julie and Thomas of Norfolk, MA.
