Donald R. Empson, born July 23, 1946 near Ulysses, Pennsylvania, passed away on February 21, 2026. Raised in a large family with several brothers and sisters, Don grew up with the values of hard work, loyalty, and quiet resilience that stayed with him throughout his life.
As a young man, Don enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, proudly serving his country for six years. His time in the Navy shaped him deeply, giving him both discipline and a lifelong sense of purpose.
After completing his military service, Don returned to Pennsylvania and worked for several railroads, contributing to an industry that kept communities connected and commerce moving. In the early 1970s, he made the decision to relocate to Long Island, New York, where he found the place—and the profession—that would define the rest of his working life.
Don became a chief machinist at PolyPak in Melville, NY, a role he embraced with skill, dedication, and pride. He built a long and respected career there, known for his craftsmanship, reliability, and the steady presence he brought to his colleagues. He remained with PolyPak until his retirement several years ago.
Beyond his work, Don was a proud and devoted member of American Legion Post 94 in Babylon, NY. He served as a Past Commander, an honor he cherished deeply, and he was warmly regarded by his fellow veterans. The friendships he formed there lasted more than fifty years, a testament to his loyalty, his character, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life.
Don’s life was marked by service—to his country, to his work, and to the people around him. He lived with integrity, purpose, and a steady sense of duty that never wavered.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will remain a source of pride, gratitude, and quiet inspiration.
