Matilda Michelina Cerniello (nee Barbuto), 93, of Melville, formerly of Deer Park, entered into Eternal Life on Sunday, February 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Alfred Cerniello, in 2006. Devoted mother of Carolyn Adamo, Thomas Cerniello, Maria Cerniello, Richard Cerniello, Jean Gumpel, and Christine Billman. Dear mother-in-law of Donna Cerniello, John Gumpel, Stephen Billman, and the late Alfred Adamo. Adored Nana of ten grandchildren and Great-Nana of four great-grandchildren. Also survived by her Shih Tzu, Baby, who was her seventh child. Predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Caroline (Toscano) Barbuto, her sister, Rose Fox, and her brother, Bernard Barbuto.
Among family, friends, and neighbors, Matilda was known for her Sunday afternoon dinners of meatballs, scooped-out potatoes, and homemade manicotti. The aroma of her "gravy" gave everyone the comfort of love and home. Her door was always open, and her elegant table often hosted fifteen guests. Memories were made; stories were told.
Matilda studied interior design and used her artistic gifts to make clothing and costumes for her children. Her grandchildren have fond memories of learning to sew. Later in life, Matilda worked as an executive in the optical industry.
No matter what she did — be it sewing, cooking, or entertaining — Matilda did it with style and "care." She will be forever loved and deeply missed. Family will receive friends at Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, 448 W. Main Street, Babylon, Sunday, March 1, 2026, 3:00 pm-7:00 pm. Funeral mass 10:15 am Monday, March 2, 2026, Ss. Cyril & Methodius RC Church, Deer Park. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery. Remembrances and messages of condolence can be left for her family on our website: www.boyd-spencer.com.
