He grew up in a house right around the corner from Foothill Highschool, which ended up being the highschool he attended and graduated from before joining the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1976 as an aircraft maintenance specialist. Soon after retiring from the Air Force, he got into the construction business through Operating Engineers, Local 12, and had been there for over 30 years before medically retiring. After which, becoming diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The soldier in him didn’t give up, however; he beat it into remission and subsequently got very much involved in the Relay for Life charity event alongside his late wife, Debi Cometto.
He developed a passion for classic cars and guns in his youth that carried on into his entire adult life. Whether cruising Chester Avenue, rocking out to his music or competing in and winning marksmanship tournaments as a child, this man never the let the exuberant child in him fade away. Everyone in his circle was invited to partake in those passions, resulting in lasting and cherished memories of conquering the dirt and asphalt on wheels of all kinds as well as competing for the truest aim, literally blasting the foothills of Kern and Riverside Counties. In addition to being a gun collector, Harry was also a collector of coins, Three Stooges & Roy Rogers memorabilia and anything and everything related to bears.
When life had him drained, he’d recharge with every man’s favorite past time - fishing. Beer in one hand, rod in the other, close friend at his side - the perfect ingredients for relaxation and good laughs. Between his best friends in life, Dave Saunders, Jaime Shorrock, and Dennis DuBois, there was never a dull moment. The other best friend that all men share, the recliner, is where he’d clock many hours watching the game, his favorite shows, and disturbing the peace with that state of the art surround sound.
Mexican food….that was his weakness! If you invited him over for carne asada tacos and a chelada beer, you had a best friend for life!!
Mexican dogs….this guy had a soft spot for little demons, better known as chihuahuas. No better home alarm system or personal bodyguards than these ankle biters. He was an animal lover overall and also loved his many cats throughout the years. Fittingly, he was a papa bear about his dogs and grand babies! He always had one of his dogs on his lap, or up on his shoulder and if unfamiliar people tried to give him a hug, the demons would be unleashed.
Harry had a childlike personality, a big kid at heart, a goofball, always joking around and teasing the ones he loved. He wasn’t afraid to be himself and had no shame in admitting which movies or songs would make him cry. Movies such as Old Yeller or Marley and Me would really hit him hard because the death of an animal was a real tear jerker to him! He had a big heart, was hardly ever angry, and an emotional man who loved his family and friends. He will truly be missed.
