An only child, Martha was born on October 8, 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Carroll and Rosemarie Arnold. She grew up in Loch Raven and graduated from Towson High School before going on to attend and graduate from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) with a degree in Fine Arts.
Much of her working adult life was spent in the printing industry and while working at Bay Printing, she met her loving and patient husband of 42 years, Paul Miller. They were married in a small ceremony on August 6, 1981.
Martha was from the “waste-not” generation and was an example of how to use items to their fullest and was skilled in repairing things that most people would have thrown away. She had also begun bringing her own Tupperware to restaurants to avoid unnecessary waste from excess plastic containers. She was my first example of how to be steward of the Earth and I have taken her examples to heart and expanded my own zero-waste efforts.
Martha was also an avid crafter and while her craft room would suggest otherwise, she particularly loved painting and sewing. Over the years she decorated much of her house with special custom-painted pieces such as fairies or cats. She was an un-official all-knowing source of information on how to do most any craft from knitting and crocheting to sewing and paper crafts. She always seemed to have just the right item to save the day. And was always willing to help in a crisis – like when you need a dress hemmed for a Communion and it takes 10 hours to complete and you need it in 2 weeks. Thank you Mom!
She was also handy with power tools and together with her husband, rebuilt almost all of their 100 year old house by hand. In fact, they had just completed their final restorations to the interior of the house prior to her passing.
Some of her favorite things included billiards, stars and constellations, spicy Bloody Mary cocktails, warm blankets, unsweet iced tea with lemon and Sweet & Lo, roaring fires, Starbucks Lemon Cake and her family.
It’s hard to summarize someone’s life and impact into a few short paragraphs but suffice it to say she was a beautiful soul, a devoted and beloved wife, a loving mother and grandmother (Marmom and Marmee) and she will be forever missed.
She is survived her Husband, Paul Miller; Daughter, Claire Dankelman; Son-in-law, Thomas Dankelman; Grand-daughter, Madeline Dankelman; Stepson, Michael Miller; Daughter-in-law, Keri Miller, Grandchildren, Makenzie and Kolton Miller; Cousin, Joanne Paul; First Cousins, Michael Schenk and Linda Schenk
A viewing will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, Maryland on Saturday, June 10th starting at 11am with a short service at 1:30pm from Pastor Andrew Bell. A cremation burial will take place on Friday, June 16th at 1pm at Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens
