Maxie Maxium Shields

Maxie Maxium Shields, a proud U.S. Marine and dedicated firefighter, passed away on May 17, 2025. Though he had no children of his own, Maxie lived a life devoted to service, family, and friendship—becoming a father figure, mentor, and unwavering presence to many.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maxie answered the call to duty early, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps shortly after high school. He served with honor and toughness—traits that would define him for the rest of his life. After his military service, Maxie returned home and continued to serve, joining Engine 44 in Hampden as a firefighter. For decades, he ran into burning buildings when others ran out, saved lives with steady hands, and earned the respect of his brothers and sisters at the station.

He was a man of simple pleasures: Listening to Classic Country, drinking Grey Goose on the rocks, a Marlboro Red Shortie between his fingers, and a stack of lottery tickets he insisted were "just one win away."

Maxie is the beloved son of the late Mary Jane King ; dear uncle of Connie Sakpazis, Richard Grimes, Sissy Bowser, Frank Shields, Frankie Shields, and Angel Shields; cherished great uncle of Demitria Sakpazis, Gabriella Pizza, Michael Pizza, Brianna Berry, and Katelyn Berry; brother of Ricky Withers, Lester Easton and the late Alva Ashbrook, Billy Withers, Frankie Shields, Charles Shields and Bobby Withers. Maxie is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Burgee Henss Seitz Funeral Home, Inc. 3631 Falls Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21211 on Thursday, May 22, 2025, from 4-7pm. A Celebration of Maxie's Life will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 10:00 am. Interment of ashes will take place at Wesley Chapel Church Cemetery on a later date. This page will be updated once the burial date has been confirmed.

He lived for others, fought for those he loved, and never once asked for anything in return. Semper Fi, Maxie. Rest easy—we’ll take it from here.
