Alice (Aaltje) deGier was born to Gysbertus and Jannegje Lam on a farm outside Amersfoort, The Netherlands, on June 4,1923. She had an older sister and brother, and when she was 11, God in his Providence gave her a younger brother but days later took her mother.
Quitting school at the age of 13, when it was no longer compulsory, Alice began to work on the family farm. Her father remarried and there she experienced the terrors of World War II. About seven years after the war Alice met John (Jacobus Johannes) de Gier. John had his heart set on immigrating to Canada and so shortly after marrying on April 16th, 1953, John and Alice boarded the Veendam to Canada. Beginning in Red Deer, Alberta, various moves brought John and Alice to Neerlandia to work and raise the children that God had given them.
Alice loved to read Church papers and devotional books. She loved to play the organ, tell stories and jokes, sew and knit. She noticed the outsider and invited them in.
Through the hardships of losing her mother, surviving the war, immigrating to Canada, losing a child and other sorrows, Alice showed in her life the truth of Romans 5: "knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."
Alice will be missed by her six surviving children Mary Jane (Bob) Nedved, Bert, Evelyn (Jim) Faulkner, Jeannette (Harlan) Paulson, Grace (Alexander) Jewett, and Connie (Dean) Hilton, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, her brother Dirk and his wife Ali . Alice is predeceased by her son Cornelius in 1961 and her husband John on February 10th, 2010.
