He was born in Edmonton, Alberta and was raised on a farm in Bloomsbury near Barrhead. He then went on to support his wife as she returned to teaching, taking on the main responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and raising his school-aged children.
He was elected six times (from 1976 to 1991) to the Board of Education for the County of Barrhead as the town representative and was chair of the Yellowhead Regional Library Board for six years.
He was also the local Commissioner of Oaths and officiated at 412 weddings from 1986 to 2006.
