Our dear Earth Angel, Joan Irene Gallatin went to be with her lifetime mate, Carl, on September 29, 2010. Joan was a grand lady in nature, caring and always there with support and love. Joan was born in England on January 17, 1917. October that year she arrived in Canada with her parents and older siblings where they settled in Alberta and grew up in the Manola area. Joan met Carl Stanton Gallatin and they started their 71 years of marriage on August 5, 1938. They settled east of Barrhead where they together built a fine life for themselves and their children. Joan supported and worked alongside Carl in all their endeavours and hard times. Joan was very active in the community and church, and later when the children were gone she found new aspirations like taking swimming lessons and the enjoyment of painting. She loved adventure and learning something new. Joan’s hands were always busy cooking her great meals; making wool quilts; knitting socks, sweaters or baby outfits for her family; or crocheting a blanket for a gift. She also enjoyed playing cards. Joan and Carl were on the farm for 64 years before moving to Barrhead. Joan is survived by seven children, Doreen (Fred), Edmund (Dorothy), Elsie (Fred), Gordon (Loretta), Allan (Annette), Bryan (CJ), and Mary (Gary); 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Gwen O’Dell and Hazel Balmer; sister-in-law, Nettie Bryant; and brother-in-law, Harold (Kay) Gallatin. Joan was predeceased by her husband Carl (2009); parents, Harry and Martha Bryant; brothers, George, Harry and Ernest; sisters, Nellie and Margaret; son-in-law, George Horvath; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Gallatin; brothers-in-law, Clair and Everett Gallatin; sisters-in-law, Elnora (and Harold) Laird and Mildred Klumph. The celebration of Joan’s long life will be held at the Barrhead United Church at 2 pm on Saturday, October 9, 2010 with lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Barrhead United Church, Barrhead Healthcare Centre or a charity of one’s choice.
