Anthony Michael Sobczak, 77, of Bartlett, TN, left this world at Methodist North Hospital on August 11th, 2025, and joined his beloved wife, Donna Berniece Sobczak, in eternal life. She had passed away fourteen months earlier on June 3rd, 2024 at the same hospital.
He is survived by his son, Sean Sobczak, and his wife, Jennifer Moore of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by his sister, Bonita (Thomas) Rechlicz of Oak Creek, WI.
Tony was born on March 19th, 1948 in Milwaukee WI, to the late Eleanore Margret (Kobuszewski) Sobczak and Ervin Anthony Sobczak.
He went to Saint Helen’s Grade School, graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1966, and attended Marquette University until he joined the United States Air Force in 1968. He married Donna on March 21st, 1970, in Peoria, IL, and his son Sean was born on December 18th, 1970 while Tony was stationed in Thailand at the Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, a Staff Sergeant repairing weather equipment on fighter jets.
After receiving an honorable discharge in 1972, Tony returned to Milwaukee and continued working in aviation electronics at Astronautics. Soon though, Clement J. Zablocki, one of Wisconsin’s longest-serving members of the US House of Representatives and a strong supporter of US Veterans, assisted Tony in acquiring a job at the United States Postal Service, working as an Electronic Technician. Tony continued working at the post office until he retired in 2006, having garnered many awards of recognition during his career. He began in Milwaukee but was transferred to Schaumburg, IL, in 1991, then to Atlanta, GA, in 1992, and finally to Memphis, TN in 2002 where he retired as a Maintenance Management Specialist.
Tony was a devoted and loving husband and father. He played support roles for his wife’s musical groups, including as videographer for her choral group, The Wolf River Singers, and later her Hawaiian inspired ukulele group, Hawaiian North 40. He attended Burning Man in 2006 as part of the support team for his son’s large scale art project, and was always there for whatever Donna and Sean needed. Family was the most important thing in his life. He loved his nieces and nephews, and was not just an in-law, but a true sibling to his sister’s husband and to Donna’s family.
He loved all things electronic and became an early adopter of home computing, starting with the TRS-80. Tony was already on the internet in 1979, via Compuserve. Over the years, he became everyone’s go-to for solving computer problems. He was also a lover of all things mechanical. Tony stripped down and rebuilt his his first car, a ’65 Mustang, which he used to drag race at Great Lakes Dragaway, and over time, also became everyone’s go-to for fixing car problems. There was nothing he couldn’t figure out. In his later years, he spread his creative wings and became obsessed with wood turning, laser engraving and 3D printing.
Tony also enjoyed spending his time volunteering with the Bartlett Police Department’s VIPs program, serving his community.
Tony adored his dog Daisy May, who he and Donna rescued 13 years earlier, and in the last week of his life, he rescued a new pup, Sadie, who brought intense joy to his final days. Both pups will be adopted by family and friends.
In keeping with Tony’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral or memorial services. Instead, he will be privately cremated, with his and Donna’s ashes to be scattered in Hawaii at a later date. If you’d like to honor his memory, please considering adopting from a pet rescue or making a donation to support our nation’s veterans.
Anthony Sobczak will be missed by all who knew him.
