Charles Lee Sutton met his Savior face to face on October 24, 2023. Born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 30, 1932, Dr. Sutton spent much of his youth in the Memphis area and in St. Petersburg, Florida before returning to Memphis State College (which later became the University of Memphis) where he earned his Civil Engineering degree in only two and a half years. During that time, he met the love of his life, Beverly Johnson, whom he married in 1954. He furthered his education at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center: College of Dentistry and earned his DDS with a specialty in oral surgery. Upon graduation, Dr. Sutton entered the U.S. Air Force where he served for two years as a Captain.
Dr. Sutton returned to the Memphis area and established his dental practice and he and Beverly were blessed with a son, Brent, who was the light of their lives. Dr. Sutton volunteered his time doing dental surgery on large animals at the Memphis Zoo and was an avid fly fisherman, a noted marksman, and an accomplished linguist. He learned ancient Greek and Hebrew to help him better study the original Biblical manuscripts, as the Bible was the foundation for his strong and unwavering faith. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America and was a guest lecturer in the University Of Memphis Biology Department. He and his wife loved to travel but found no greater joy than the quiet respite of their log cabin at their farm. Known for his beaming smile, whimsical cartoon drawings, and his ever-popular salute, Dr. Sutton was greatly loved and deeply respected.
Charles Lee Sutton was pre-deceased by his parents Charles Calhoun and Mary Francis Sutton, several siblings, his wife Beverly Johnson Sutton, and his son Charles Brent Sutton. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Kellie Sutton Thompson, and his grandchildren, Charles Canon Sutton and Sophia Jeanette Friend Sutton of Hubert, NC.
A visitation for Charles will be held Friday, October 27, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, followed by a graveside service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
