With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Denny James Burns, a devoted son, husband, father, brother, and grandfather whose steady presence and unwavering loyalty shaped the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Born on March 6, 1948, Denny was the son of the James Alan Burns and the Velma Vouhre Burns, and the brother of the Kenneth Wayne Burns. He carried forward the values instilled in him by his family—hard work, humility, and a quiet strength that spoke louder than words ever could.
Denny’s greatest joy, however, was found in the people he loved. He shared 52 years of marriage with his wife, Virginia Carol Burns, his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a life filled with devotion, laughter, and countless memories—especially their peaceful days fishing at Sardis, a pastime that brought them both comfort and happiness.
He was a proud father to Christopher Bryan Burns (spouse Julie Burns) and Heath Bradley Burns (Stephanie Tutor, Gabby, Smith and Lilly), and he cherished every moment spent deer hunting with Chris and Heath, and duck hunting with Chris and Kenny. These traditions were more than hobbies—they were the threads that wove their family together.
Nothing lit up Denny’s world more than his grandchildren: Peyton, Colbie, and Chandler Burns. They were his pride, his joy, and the stories he loved to tell. Denny was the kind of grandfather whose love left a lasting imprint.
Denny was a proud graduate of Kingsbury High School, where he was a standout athlete in both football and track & field. His talent and determination on the field earned him a scholarship to continue his career at Arkansas State University, where he excelled as an outstanding football player.
Denny also loved watching Ole Miss football games and tailgating with his family, creating some of the most joyful and spirited memories they shared together.
For 53 years, Denny dedicated his life and career to Patton Tully Marine, LLC, where he became not just a respected colleague but a cornerstone of the company’s legacy. His work ethic, reliability, and deep knowledge of the river and the industry earned him admiration across generations.
Denny leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, love, and quiet strength. He will be remembered for his steady hand, his deep devotion to family, and the way he lived—honorably, humbly, and wholeheartedly.
He will be forever missed and forever cherished.
