

Donald Alvin Drewes, 84, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2016 at Methodist Hospice Residence after a long illness. Don, affectionately known as “Big D.” was born March 5, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated in 1950 from Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Ohio after which he attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. After two years of College, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He spent part of his service stationed in Berlin, Germany as an interpreter. Don moved his family to Memphis in 1970. He was employed by Steelcraft Corporation, retiring after 25 years as Vice President of Finance. Don loved and spent many years actively enjoying playing golf, flying small planes and sailing. One of his most valued memories was of his sailing trip to Cuba. He and friends were part of a sanctioned flotilla which took medical supplies to Cuba. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan Long Drewes; his daughters, Kathy Haskins (Marty) and Karen Riedel (Brant); and his grandchildren, Zach and Katie Riedel. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, June 28 from 5-7 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd.
