November 1, 1943 – September 23, 2011
Gayle Louise Garth, or “GG” as she is known by her grandchildren, unexpectedly passed away in her home on Friday September 22.
Gayle was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. Her parents, Clara Louise Garth and William Price Garth, raised a beautiful, energetic and independent woman. Gayle attended Ole Miss from 1961-1965 where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.
After college, Gayle dedicated her entire career to the Shelby County School System as an elementary teacher. After retiring in 2006, “GG” focused her time on her six grandchildren. One of her real joys was eating out with the kids, always the location of their choosing, and having them play at her house and spoiling them with popsicle after popsicle. And all the hugs she could give.
Gayle also became a world traveler and made a memorable trip to Europe; she most recently enjoyed a cruise off the Florida Coast . She was also a member of Germantown United Methodist Church where she was involved in the women’s ministry.
Gayle is survived by her son, John Patterson and his wife Robin of Arlington, TN, and their children Sarah, Emily and Caroline; she is survived by her daughter Paige Patterson Williams and Paige’s husband Shad D. Williams of Germantown, TN, and their children Ramsay, Addison and Brennan.
Gayle also leaves behind her brother Dr. William P. Garth, Jr. and his wife Pam, of Birmingham, and her younger Robert Earl Garth of Canton, MS.
Visitation will be held this Tuesday, September 27 at Germantown United Methodist Church, 2331 South Germantown Road, from 10:30 to 11:30, with a Noon service following visitation. Gayle will be laid to rest at Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Avenue, in Memphis.
