Linda Rachel Patrick Hanley, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away on February 15th at the age of 81. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and the warmth of a home always filled with the aroma of her incredible cooking.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Louis Patrick and seven cherished siblings: Robert “Bobby” Patrick, Charles Patrick, Flossie Albert, Betty Jean Landers, Willard Patrick, Margie Robinson, and Larry Patrick, who she is now reunited with in heaven.
She is survived by her devoted husband of almost 62 years, James “Jim” Hanley, and their two children, Jimmy Hanley and Jeana Cartwright. Linda also leaves behind five grandchildren—John Hanley, Chris Swearingen (Ashley Swearingen), Anthony Swearingen (Lauren Swearingen), Rachel Swearingen (Michael Brennan), and Clark Hanley (Taylor Hanley)—as well as seven great-grandchildren, who brought her immense pride and joy. She is further survived by her brother, Harold Patrick, and sisters, Faye Yarbrough and Dorothy Cavender.
Born in Jackson, Tennessee, Linda (known as “Ninnie” or “Nannie” by her grand/great grandchildren) moved to Memphis with her husband Jim Hanley in 1968. She had a fulfilling career in accounting and took great pride in her work. Linda was a founding member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she devoted herself to her faith and service to Christ. Her life was rich with love, always surrounded by family and friends.
A phenomenal cook, Linda shared her love through every meal she prepared, whether it was a family dinner, a church gathering, or a simple dish made with someone special in mind. Her kitchen was more than a place for cooking – it was a space of comfort, laughter and togetherness.
When she wasn’t cooking, you could find her by the water, fishing rod in hand, or under the stars at a campsite, embracing the peace of nature. A devoted Christian, her faith was her guiding light, and she lived each day with the kindness, humility, and unwavering devotion of God.
More than anything, Linda was the glue of her family. Selfless to her core, she never hesitated to put others before herself, always offering a helping hand, a listening ear, or a warm embrace. She was a true friend, the kind who would do anything for those she loved, and her generosity and love knew no bounds.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with Jesus and loved ones who have gone before her. Her spirit will live on in every shared meal, every camping trip and every act of kindness inspired by her love.
A celebration of Linda’s life will be held on Friday, February 21st, in the sanctuary of St. Paul United Methodist Church at 2949 Davies Plantation Rd, Lakeland, TN 38002. There will be a visitation from 11:00am-12:00pm with service immediately following at 12:00pm. Flowers may be sent to St. Paul United Methodist Church, or a donation may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church in her honor.
