Maxine Epps Dowd

MARTHA MAXINE EPPS DOWD, age 89 and 7 months, passed away on the evening of Wednesday, May 28, 2014. She was the widow of Dr. George Leroy Dowd, her husband of 64 years. She is survived by their daughter, Marilyn Louise Dowd. Maxine was born on October 16, 1924 the youngest daughter of Jennie Duke Epps and Samuel Edward Epps. She was born, raised and educated in the Sardis, Black Jack Community of Panola Co., Mississippi. She attended Union University in Jackson, TN where she met George a fellow student finishing his degree. They married in the summer of 1947 beginning their lives together. She later finished her degree there in 1951 in business. In the 1960’s she attended classes at Memphis State University completing her Master’s degree. Having completed her certification to teach elementary education she began an over 30 year career teaching third grade in Shelby Co and Memphis City Schools at Brownsville Road Elementary School. At her retirement she was their first hired and longest tenured teacher. She and Dr. Dowd were blessed with a wonderful life together enjoying God’s gifts of life and love.
