

Robert W. Mathews, 82, of Cordova, passed away on May 27, 2013. Mr. Mathews was born on Valentine’s Day 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. He went to high school there until he was 17 years old and immediately joined the U.S. Marine Corps, and was sent to Camp Parris Island, South Carolina. He served on active duty for twenty-five years. He served duty in Korea in 1953 and Vietnam in 1969. He also served in Cherry Point, NC., Pensacola, FL., El Toro, CA., Hawaii and then retired from Millington, TN., in 1973. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Mathews went to college and received an Associate’s Degree in Accounting in 1974 and went to work for Navy Memphis Federal Credit Union from 1974 until 1982. He became employed by Memphis Area Teachers Credit Union where he worked and retired in 1996. Mr. Mathews is a member at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Johana Mathews, brothers Vincent R., James S., daughter Diane Marie and a son Robert William. Mr. Mathews is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Irma Jean Mathews, his daughter Carol Mathews MacIntosh, son-in-law David G. MacIntosh and grandson Trey MacIntosh. The family will receive friends from 9-10am with a Funeral Mass at 10am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 8151 Chimneyrock Blvd., Cordova, TN 38016. There will be a burial to follow at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd.
