Walter Nelson Holmes Sr., 89, of Bartlett, passed away on February 21, 2016. Known affectionately as “Bud” and “Sarge,” he was retired from the U.S. Army and Great Dane Trailers. He proudly served in WWII and the Korean War. He enjoyed traveling across the US with his wife and spoiling the family pets. He was also a member of the Shriners and VFW. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Ardelle Holmes, and his sister, Dorothy Hawks. He is survived by his children, Carrie Kelly (Bill), Dianne Stever, and Walt Holmes (Linda), and his sister, Betty Billings. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren Mark (late Tina), Rene, Tony (Betsy), Michael, Patricia (Randy), Christopher (Yvonne), Derek, Tasha (Blake), and Erika (Drew); and his nine great grandchildren Nathaniel, Ethan, Shea, Tara, Logan, Sylvanna, Spencer, Victoria, and Damian. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 24 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N Germantown Road, Bartlett, TN. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Thursday, February 25 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Shriners Burn Institute.
