A good man, Butch never sent school security officers to do anything he wouldn't do himself.  He was equal opportunity, firm in his beliefs and hilarious in his rich variety of stories. I missed him when he left MNPS, I miss him now. RIP, Butch Crook.

On this day, February 28, I'm thinking of my boss who turned friend, Butch Crook. So, here are some Butchisms:
When you're feeling low, "you just need a diet coke and a moonpie."
When you ask what have you been up to, "swingin a dead cat" or "just fumbling around.
When talking about cars, "you'll never find a better car than a Crown Vic" or "the best tires are Michelin."
When he was unsure of legal or HR issues, "I'll ask Val."
On his birthday, "the weather is always bad on February 28, when I was a little boy I could never go out to play with my toys because the weather was always bad."
And my favorite, "let's get something to eat." 
He was a great boss, a great friend and is sadly missed. Big love, Butch, from here to there.

I served with Butch in the 194th Engineer Brigade and during Hurricane Katrina Deployment.  He was a very intelligent and articulate individual with an infectious personality.  I am very saddened about his passing and Val, my family has you in our prayers and in the days to come as well.

I went to school with Butch from the 1st grade to HS graduation.    A wonderful fella  with one of the best sense of humor that I have ever known.  He will surely be missed 


Butch Crook was a gem of a man. He was my campaign’s MVP and secret weapon, both times, because he was a true man of service who loved people. He was clever, personable, hard working and flat out hilarious. Campaign days can be difficult, hot, discouraging and monotonous, but Butch made them fun. He didn’t know a stranger.

But for me Butch was more than a campaign worker who jumped in because he just wanted to help his community; he was a true friend. We had lunch three weeks ago, just before the sudden ailment that rapidly took him from us. At lunch we just laughed and laughed, like always, and at the end he again invited me and Alison to join him sometime at his cabin at Greers Ferry Lake. I regret now it was always just “sometime.”

When I first met Butch, he didn’t know the first thing about me but decided to volunteer because he figured “there ain’t nothing wrong with him.” This was the best praise Butch ever gave me, and all that was needed. He never sought any spotlight; he just wanted to find reasonable people and help them. It was also signature Butch, because it was hardly a strong endorsement, but it’s a pretty funny thing to tell someone, and he didn’t want anyone to get a big head.

He was a man full of incredible stories, stories I was never sure I could believe, but all of them actually true. I think.

My military time coincided closely with Butch's service. Such a special guy and a delight to be around! Egypt, Honduras, even ole' Camp Shelby MS was better when pulling duty with Butch.  A final Salute my friend.

Butch was our neighbor across the street. We loved hearing him tell stories. He always made us laugh! He was such a good man! The world is a darker place without him in it. Our prayers are with his family. May God bless you!

I remember Butch, Maj Crook, during his NG service in HHC 30th Brigade in Jackson, TN.  He was the intelligence  officer.  He always had a smile and a great attitude.  I consider him a good friend.

May your memories of the wonderful times you shared with your loved one comfort you and your family, today and always. 

Butch brother, I only knew you for a short time but you became a friend quickly. So unexpected I don't know what to say.  I will miss you greatly. Thanks for helping me learn the ropes, much love and respect, may God be with your family and help them through this time.


Your days of chasing down state troopers are gone, you will be missed by so, so, many especially your loving wife. Your voice when attempting to imitate mine will always be in my head, we are so fortunate for the times we had together. Fly High and straighten Brenda out. All of our love,Crazy Shirley

"Butch"  We have known each other for 30 plus years.  Not only in the criminal justice world, but in the military as well.  It was only a week or so that we spoke about you making a presentation to the criminal justice class at JSCC,    I remember the great time we had when deployed in Central America, as well as our meetings in various airports, both going the same place under the same Federal contract.  Amazing.   As I've reached the age of 75, I've come to realize that time is short.  However, our friendship and the great memories over the years we shared will be with me forever. My world was a better place because you were a part of it.  Until we meet again, I will treasure the memories, and thank the Lord that I was blessed to have you as not only my cousin, but also my friend.  All my love to Val, Joe and Janice.
