Born on June 29, 1930, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Hucie Shugart Gates and James Fleming Gates, Sr., Bill's life was marked by dedication to his family, community, and passions.
A longstanding member of Bellevue Baptist Church since 1942, Bill contributed tirelessly, serving as Secretary and President of his Sunday School Class, a deacon, and an usher. He was an active volunteer through the years with VBS, greetings at the activities building, and carrying banners for the Banner Ministry. He treasured being a part of the men’s R.O.M.E.O. club. His commitment extended beyond the church, as evidenced by his active involvement with various community organizations, including the Memphis Angler's Club and the Lion's Club, where he served as President.
Throughout his 30-year tenure at the City of Memphis survey bureau, Bill's dedication and service were unwavering. A proud veteran of the United States Army and the National Guard, his commitment to duty was exemplary.
Bill's interests were diverse, ranging from fishing and hunting to gardening and solving jigsaw puzzles. He had a passion and a knack for numbers that supported the favored pastime of "figuring", whether he was crafting a shelf or managing finances. His love for family was unmatched, cherishing every moment spent with them.
Bill leaves behind his devoted wife of 66 years, Phyllis Gay Gates, three daughters, Hucie Gates of Memphis, TN, Lucie Herring (Frank) of Savannah, TN, Phyllis Trevathan (Ken) of Abilene, TX, two grandchildren, Nelson Herring, Jessica Herring, as well as his nephew Ben Hagins (Kathy) and great-nephew Trey Hagins (Liz).
A visitation to honor Bill's life will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bellevue Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM. The graveside service will take place at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
