

He was born Feb. 5, 1928 in Peoria to Robert and Margery (Dorsey) Slater. He married Marilyn Griffiths Aug. 26, 1950 in Peoria. She passed away Aug. 22, 2002 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Dale and Robert Slater, and one sister, Betty Dantone.
Survivors include twin daughters: Deborah (Hugh) Guthrie of Peoria, Diane Barnett of Dallas, TX, one grandson, Brent Barnett of Peoria, one granddaughter, Michelle (Dave) Krumholz of Peoria, and three great-grandchildren: Max, Emily, and Will Krumholz of Peoria.
Don was a WWII Navy Veteran and was on the USS Missouri at the time of the signing of the documents of surrender between the United States and Japan, ending WWII.
Following WWII Don was a Ceramic Tile Setter in the Peoria area. He was responsible for tiling all the Peoria area High Schools and Illinois Colleges swimming pools. He also put in all the tile at Methodist Hospital.
He was a lifetime member of the Bartonville American Legion Post 979, the First Methodist Church in Bartonville, the Peoria area Brick Layers Union, and the Joe Robbins Masonic Lodge No. 930.
Don loved to travel, especially with his two daughters. He was always ready to go at the drop of a hat. Additionally, he enjoyed attending church and doing service. Don’s interests included fishing, golf, playing cards, and his garden.
Don was proud of his military service and union membership. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends at the American Legion in Bartonville.
Don was a great family man who offered unconditional love and acceptance to everyone. He was highly thought of by those who met and knew him. His greatest pride was his twin daughters and his two grandchildren.
He will be sorely missed by his loved ones and friends.
Visitation will be Monday April 13, 2015 from 4 to 6 p.m. with Masonic Services at 3:45 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel. Funeral services will be Tuesday April 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bartonville. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral services on Tuesday.
Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria with Military Honors.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Bartonville.
