Janetta Kay Johnson, 71, of Peoria, Illinois, passed away on December 31, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to both family and education. Janetta’s life was one of quiet strength and steadfast purpose.
Born on May 18, 1954, in Pittsfield, Illinois, Janetta was the daughter of Roy and Glenda (Gourley) Miller, who instilled in her the importance of learning and compassion. A bright and determined student, she graduated as valedictorian from West Pike High School, setting the tone for a life defined by learning and achievement. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and later her master’s degree in teaching from the University of Illinois–Springfield.
Earlier in her career, Janetta worked for Channel 19, demonstrating her versatility and commitment to lifelong learning. Her passion for education eventually led her into a fulfilling teaching career that spanned two decades, during which she inspired generations of students at White Middle School and Rolling Acres Middle School. Her peers and pupils alike recognized her dedication when she was honored as Teacher of the Year—an acknowledgment of the profound impact she made on so many lives.
On August 21, 1976, Janetta married the love of her life, Nial Johnson, in El Dara, Illinois. Their marriage of nearly fifty years was built on patience, laughter, and mutual support. Together, they created a home filled with warmth and encouragement, raising two children: Brian (Amy) Johnson of Gilberts, Illinois, and Ashleigh (Steven) Dold of Wichita, Kansas. Their family later grew with the joyful addition of seven grandchildren—Caden, Collin, and Carter Johnson, and Kinslee, Brielle, Adalynn, and Amelia Dold—who were the center of Janetta’s world.
Janetta’s heart belonged to her family and the simple joys of home. She treasured time spent visiting her children and grandchildren, celebrating their milestones, and watching them grow. In addition to her devotion to family, Janetta enjoyed crafting alongside her husband and snuggling with her beloved puggles. Her gentle spirit and soft heart for animals brought comfort and warmth to all who knew her, whether human or furry friend.
A service celebrating Janetta’s life will be held at First Christian Church (6400 N University St, Peoria, IL 61614) on Monday, January 12, 2025, where her memory and spirit will be honored by family and friends. Visitation will begin at 10:00am with the service following at 11:00am.
Janetta will be remembered for her intelligence, compassion, and the steady kindness she extended to everyone she met. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and learning that will continue to ripple through generations. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
